Understanding ‘Red’ vs. ‘Orange’ Racking Damage Risk Levels: What You Need To Know

Red vs. Orange Racking Risks: What you need to know - a blog post by Stakapal

Why Risk Categorisation Matters in Racking Safety

Knowing the difference between minor damage and dangerous deformation can be the difference between a safe warehouse and a costly collapse. At Stakapal, we use industry-approved SEMA guidelines to help managers understand racking damage risk levels—especially the red and orange alert categories.

Risk Levels - The Traffic Light System Explained

Under SEMA and HSE protocols, the racking damage risk levels are categorised as:

Red Risk – Immediate Offload

  • Damage exceeds critical limits (e.g. a bend greater than 10mm).
  • Section must be offloaded and isolated with immediate effect.
  • Requires urgent repair before reuse.

Amber Risk – Monitor Daily

  • Moderate damage (e.g. a bend between 5-10mm).
  • Can remain in use temporarily but must be monitored.
  • Must be repaired within 4  – 6 weeks.

Green Risk – No Action Required

  • No significant deformation or cosmetic marks.
  • Continue regular monitoring.

Stakapal’s detailed racking inspections apply these categories precisely, ensuring every issue is flagged correctly.

What Racking Damage Should You Be Looking Out For?

Common warning signs to look out for:

  • Bent upright columns;
  • Damaged arms or beams;
  • Dislodged braces or missing pins.

Our inspectors at Stakapal are qualified SARIs (SEMA Approved Racking Inspectors) who use their experience, calibrated tools and measurements to assess risk thresholds—nothing is left to guesswork.

As a full manufacturing member of SEMA all our racking solutions including Cantilever Racking and Pallet Racking are designed and manufactured following SEMA and Health & Safety at Work 1974 racking regulations.

Mitigating Racking Damage Risk Levels

To prevent future issues, we recommend:

  • Load signage to be visible on the racking and clearly presented in order to prevent overloading.
  • Beam-locking pins for secure bay integrity.
  • Column guards and barriers for impact absorption and to reduce any structural damage to the racking.

Stakapal supplies and installs these safety products to enhance your racking system’s durability.
