Many businesses understand that pallet racking safety is extremely important and can help improve compliance for warehouse environments when storing palletised goods. While these systems offer great storage solutions, improving site safety within them is essential. Many risks can occur with all pallet racking, which is why it is important to follow all Health and Safety Guidelines.
Safety Issues & Rules
Your Environmental Health Officer will automatically check your Beam Locking Pins when visiting your site and the overall safety of your racking.
Such beam locking pins observations include:
- The Condition of the locking pins – ensuring they are not heavily worn.
- The locking pins are properly installed and adhere to the manufacturer’s guidelines.
- The compatibility of the locking pins – if the wrong pins are used with the wrong rack, this could be detrimental to the safety of the structure.
The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 requires you to:
- Provide safe systems and equipment for using, handling, storing and transporting articles and substances.
- Provide the relevant information, instruction, training and supervision as is necessary to ensure the health and safety at work of employees.
- The most common causes of collapse or accidents with falling stock from Pallet Racking are dislodged beam connectors.
- Missing or damaged Beam Locking Pins can highlight dislodged beams.

Pallet Racking Inspections
Pallet racking Inspections should be carried out by a SEMA-approved trained SARI to ensure HSE’s current guidelines are followed, ensuring the racking is safe to use. These should be completed at least every 12 months.
Stakapal offers yearly racking inspections on all racking systems installed by ourselves, including a full report utilising SEMA’s traffic light reporting system.
