Pallet Racking Corrosion
Signs of corrosion on pallet racking can occur no matter how thick the steel is in your Pallet Racking – it will still corrode if it is unprotected. Pallet Racks utilised in external yard environments or harsh conditions such as chill stores should be galvanised; paint will only protect against corrosion in the short term.
Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
Environmental Health Officers and Health & Safety Executive Officers will often serve a prohibition notice on Racking showing signs of corrosion.
The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 requires you to:
- Provide safe systems and equipment for using, handling, storing and transporting articles and substances.
- Provide the relevant information, instruction, training and supervision as is necessary to ensure the health and safety at work of employees
Corrosion of pallet racking is an indicator of the metal weakening, even if you adhere to the original weight allowances the mass of storage can prove too much for weakened racking resulting in a collapse.
